In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)IVF, fertilization of an egg outside the body, is the oldest assisted reproductive technology (ART) and still the most frequently used. Originally designed to bypass diseased fallopian tubes, uses of IVF quickly expanded to include male factor infertility, endometriosis, unexplained infertility and other conditions. Variations of IVF are the basis for many of the related ART procedures, such as egg donation, gestational surrogacy, and reciprocal IVF..A major advance in improved pregnancy rates with IVF was the use of fertility medications to induce multiple egg production. Since your body normally produces only one egg that is released for fertilization each month, you will be given certain medications to help your body produce more than one egg in an effort to increase the chances for successful fertilization in vitro. By increasing the egg number, the chance of developing a healthy embryo is increased. IVF involves the retrieval of a woman's eggs, insemination of the eggs with sperm in a Petri dish, allowing the embryos to devleop in the laboratory, followed by embryo transfer into the uterus of the woman who will carry and give birth to the baby. |
